At least two people are believed to have been murdered in Jamaica because of their sexuality in the past few months, while others have become the target of angry mobs.

David McFadden / AP

The death of Dean Moriah, a 41-year-old from Montego Bay, is again stirring fears over anti-gay violence in Jamaica after several attacks this summer.

Moriah was found naked and severely wounded early in the morning of Aug. 27 near his house, which had been set on fire. Though newspaper reports said his death resulted from a fight that "stemmed from a domestic quarrel," LGBT advocates said it was a hate crime.

"This is barbaric and a moral obscenity," wrote activist Dwayne Brown on his blog Minority Report. "How many more gay men in Jamaica should be brutally murdered before Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller led government, stand up to the hate and murderous anti-gay culture and it's people?"

A terrifying pattern of anti-gay violence has unfolded in Jamaica over the past several months. On July 22, a 17-year-old "cross-dressing teen" was "chopped and stabbed to death" by a mob after being seen dancing with a man during a street party. Since that incident, there have been several reports of mobs turning on men believed to be gay whose lives have been saved by the intervention of police.

On August 1, a mob trapped two men thought to be gay in a house in St. Catherine.

ITV has released its first trailer for the fourth season of the hit British period drama, which returns next month (and on Jan. 5 on PBS). What can you expect? Tears, dancing, and lots of emotion, for a start.

Ah, Downton Abbey, we've missed you. Despite the fact that you broke our hearts last year, not once but twice, we're eager to return to your well-appointed rooms for another season of drama, romance, and — more than likely — more heartbreak than is healthy for the average viewer. (For more on what the cast of Downton Abbey told BuzzFeed about Season 4, look no further.)

While the trailer for Season 4 contains very little dialogue — it's set to The Joy Formidable's "Wolf Law" and features but three lines, an exchange between Maggie Smith's formidable Dowager Countess and Michelle Dockery's deep in mourning Lady Mary... and one from Lily James' Lady Rose MacClare, welcoming us to Downton — it's overflowing with evocative teases about what the new season of Downton will bring: so many tears, some beautiful dances, fighting, and so many pointed looks.

Downton Abbey will return to ITV in September and to PBS' Masterpiece Classic on Jan. 5, 2014.

Administration officials refuse to comment on what Obama will do if Congress doesn’t authorize strikes on Syria. Officials say they’re confident Congress will vote yes on Obama’s war.

Mike Theiler / Reuters

WASHINGTON — President Obama appears confident Congress will join him in calling for U.S. military attacks on Syria — but top officials in his administration won't say what happens if Congress doesn't authorize him to go to war.

Senior administration officials told reporters at a White House briefing Saturday that the administration will not even discuss the possibility that Congress doesn't endorse Obama's Syria plans, so confident is the administration that Congress will go along. That leaves a big question on the table after Obama's surprising Rose Garden announcement: What happens if Congress votes no?

The officials pointed to this line in Obama's remarks to make clear that the administration does not believe it's giving up what it sees as legal authority to attack Syria without Congress.

While I believe I have the authority to take military action without specific Congressional authorization, I know that the country will be stronger if we take this course and our actions will be even more effective. We should have this debate because the issues are too big for business as usual.

Decades of policy require the United States to respond to the use of chemical weapons, Obama said, and senior administration officials made it clear that they expect Congress to back them. But they also said Obama wasn't giving the legal power to authorize the Syria attacks back to Congress, leaving open at least the possibility that Obama could strike after the Congress decides not to authorize strikes.

The senior administration officials' comments came in a briefing in which participants agreed not to name the speakers or quote them directly.

In the view of the White House, the officials said, a Congressional vote against strikes in Syria would be an embarrassment to both Congress and the country. Interestingly, the officials said it was British Prime Minister David Cameron's public humiliation at the hands of the House of Commons last week that helped Obama make the decision to seek Congressional approval. Obam mentioned the British debate in his remarks Saturday.

"Many people have advised against taking this decision to Congress, and undoubtedly, they were impacted by what we saw happen in the United Kingdom this week when the Parliament of our closest ally failed to pass a resolution with a similar goal, even as the Prime Minister supported taking action," Obama said. "Yet, while I believe I have the authority to carry out this military action without specific congressional authorization, I know that the country will be stronger if we take this course, and our actions will be even more effective."

The president's decision to seek Congressional approval came Friday night, officials said, and was not prompted by any request from Congressional leaders. In the United Kingdom, after the the parliament voted against Cameron's call for strikes in Syria, the British leader abandoned the idea. It's not clear that Obama would do the same thing, and administration officials said Saturday that, legally, he doesn't have to.

But while the legal logic of that may be in debate, it's difficult to see the political path to bombing Syria after a congressional rebuff.

“We have been fooled. I don’t accept the judgement,” said the victim’s mother.

India / Reuters

The youngest suspect in the horrific gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in India's capital last year was found guilty, but only sentenced to three years imprisonment, the maximum sentence under India's juvenile law. The teenager was six months short of 18 years -- the age of adulthood -- when he committed the crime. He will spend the three year sentence in a correctional home.

Demonstrators shout slogans outside the juvenile court in New Delhi after the teenager was sentenced to three years in juvenile detention for the December 16, 2012 gang rape and murder of the 23-year-old medical student. The demonstrators were demanding capital punishment for the teenager. The text on the headband of the demonstrator reads, "16 December revolution.".

India / Reuters

The first verdict in the case, which made international headlines last year, sparked outrage because of what was widely believed to be a soft sentence for the juvenile.

The victim's younger brother allegedly tried to attack him as the sentence was being delivered by the Juvenile Justice Board in New Delhi. He was restrained but broke down after coming out of the courtroom.

"The accused has been sentenced to three years, which is very less for him in comparison to the crime he committed. He should be hanged here only," he said in tears.

The victim's parents also broke down as they rushed out of the packed courtroom. "I was already dead on December 29, when I lost my daughter," the father said. "The board should have sentenced the juvenile keeping in mind his crime and not thinking of his age at the time of offense."

The victim's mother refused to accept the sentence.

"There was no need for these proceedings. We have been fooled. I don't accept the judgment," she said.

Cristin Milioti talks with BuzzFeed on how she went from The Sopranos , 30 Rock , and the Broadway musical Once to the most highly prized role in a network comedy in years. And how, along the way, she (almost) made out with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Cristin Milioti as the Mother on How I Met Your Mother

youtube.com

When Cristin Milioti made her debut as the Mother on the eighth season finale of CBS' How I Met Your Mother, she made headlines across the world. But other than fans of Broadway (where Milioti was nominated for a Tony last year for her leading role in the musical Once), and NBC's 30 Rock (where Milioti made a lasting impression as a "sexy baby" comedienne), the 28-year-old actress remains largely an unknown. To most HIMYM fans, in fact, she is simply just the Mother.

Within her first week in Los Angeles to shoot the ninth and final season of HIMYM, however, Milioti nearly gained notoriety for something else entirely.

"I was almost arrested for drunk driving," she says.

Milioti recently sat down with me for her first wide-ranging interview since landing the one of most highly anticipated roles in television. A dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker, with enormous, expressive eyes and a natural amiability, she was still adjusting to life as a Los Angeles driver, including navigating the city's byzantine street parking signs. "I got four parking tickets my first week," she says with a laugh. "I mean, I can read. I can speak English fairly well. But I got very confused by the poles with the five different [parking] signs on them. I got a ticket right in front of my house, because I didn't see the street sweeping [sign]. Another time, I didn't turn my wheels [on a hill]. I didn't even know about the wheel turning!"

And then there was the evening when Milioti was driving at 15 miles per hour in her brand-new Mini Cooper on Fountain Avenue, trying to find her friend's street after a partaking of a local sushi bar. "I was stone-cold sober," she says. "I got flagged into a DUI checkpoint. And then I couldn't figure out how to open the window, because I had just gotten the car, like, an hour before. So they thought I was drunk. I failed all the sobriety tests, because I have terrible balance and I couldn't stop laughing, like crying laughing. They made me take two Breathalyzers because they didn't believe me, and I blew a 0.00. Apparently, my pupils in their resting state look like someone who's twice the legal limit. It was a really traumatic first few hours."

When I ask if she was ever worried about TMZ showing up, she looks at me as if I'd asked if she'd ever seen a Cockamouse. "No. I mean, not at all," she says. "They would be like, 'Small, Vampire-Looking Young Man Is Pulled Over. No One Cares!'"

After HIMYM's two-part season premiere on Sept. 23, however, a lot more people are going to care about Cristin Milioti. To give you a head start, here are 10 things about her you need to know now.

1. She went to New York University to study acting — and quickly dropped out — but her real passion is music.

Milioti grew up in a New Jersey exurb of Philadelphia, where she would go with friends "to smoke Capri Slims and walk around with hemp necklaces on." She performed in high school plays, saw her first Broadway show at 16, and decided to study acting at NYU — but she dropped out within a year. "I was so unhappy there," she says. "There were, like, 30 kids in acting class; half of them weren't even theater majors. I just was really itching to get out and do stuff, and I think I also had done really poor research. Like, I didn't know there was a place like Juilliard. I think that's what I thought [NYU was like] — you just do acting all day. This was like, you take, hard classes, in subjects I wasn't prepared for — which I actually wish I paid more attention to."

In point of fact, Milioti says she's actually been singing far longer than she's ever thought about pursuing acting as a career. "I've sung for way longer than I've acted," she says. "I sang in bands all throughout high school and loved it." Her father, who runs an IT business, had worked as a recording studio engineer, and always had music playing in the house, even at breakfast. "He introduced me to Adele. Like, he knows things before anyone. He's really plugged into that world."

But as Milioti's theater career began to take off in New York — first with a production of The Lieutenant of Inishmore in 2006, followed largely by a series of off-Broadway plays — there was one arena Milioti struggled to break into. "I auditioned for musicals and no one would have me," she says. "I couldn't get called back for a musical to save my life. The closest I ever got was Spider-Man." That all changed when she booked the lead role of The Girl in the Broadway adaptation of 2007 indie-folk musical sensation Once. "That's the style of music that I really love."
